Comte Georges de Vogue

Comte Georges de Vogue

With a legacy spanning more than 500 years of history and after 20 generations, the famous Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue is steeped in ancient Burgundian history and tradition. The unique history dates back to the mid-15th century, with the first recorded mention of the family in 1450. The modern era began in 1925 when Comte Georges de Vogue took over the estate, bringing it to international prominence. Today, the Domaine is owned by his granddaughters, Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, who continue to uphold the family's commitment to excellence.

The Domaine is particularly known for its exceptional vineyards in the Chambolle Musigny appellation. Owning 12.5 hectares of prime vineyards, the most prestigious plots include the “Queen of Burgundy” Musigny Grand Cru. In fact, Vogue is the largest owner of Musigny, with around 7.25 ha that includes all of the Petit Musigny plot, accounting for roughly 80% of the whole climat. The average age of vines in Musigny is 40 years old, and all are labelled as Vieilles Vignes. Le Musigny is one of the greatest terroirs in the Cote de Nuits, with a mere production of a few thousand bottles a year. A fine red Musigny is a magical wine, combining seductive power and finesse with an incredible spectrum of aromas. It is commonly described as "an iron fist in a velvet glove." There are notes of crushed strawberries and licorice when young. Given 15-25 years to mature, the result is the quintessence of finesse and elegance.

The other important plots include Bonnes Mares Grand Cru (2.75 ha), known for its structured and powerful wines, which tends to be more robust, with more direct fruit and stronger tannins, offering a contrast to the elegance of Musigny. Additionally, Chambolle Musigny Premier Cru “Les Amoureuses” (0.56 ha) is a highly esteemed Premier Cru site, producing wines that are often considered to rival those of Grand Cru quality. The Domaine also produced a Musigny Blanc till 1993, when the old vines were grubbed up for replanting. The production of Musigny Blanc is indeed very limited.

The winemaking team, led by winemaker Jean-Luc Pepin and vineyard manager Francois Millet, focuses on expressing the unique terroir of each vineyard site. They stress the importance of approaching each vintage with an open mind. Key practices include sustainable viticulture, minimal intervention, hand harvesting and environmental stewardship. The wines are meant for long cellaring, make sure to leave sufficient breathing time to enjoy Burgundy’s rare and remarkable treasures.
