Petrus

Petrus

Chateau Petrus is so much more than a vineyard, its name is synonymous with elegance and prestige, a legend in a bottle, and the Jewel of Pomerol. Its wines are often recognized as among the most prestigious and expensive in the world. The estate derives its name from Saint Peter (Sanctus Petrus in Latin), whose drawing is featured on the label, symbolizing the strength and enduring legacy of its namesake.

Nestled on the storied plateau of Pomerol, the history of Petrus stretches back to the 1750s when the property was first mentioned in records related to a land purchase involving Chateau Gazin. In 1887, the estate expanded by acquiring more premier parcels from the neighboring Gazin. Petrus has evolved from a hidden gem to a global icon, renowned for its unparalleled quality and mystique.

The estate's rise to fame is a tale of vision and dedication, particularly under the stewardship of the Moueix family, whose transformative influence began in the mid-20th century. The 1945 vintage marked the beginning of "the great age of Petrus," leading to its international acclaim. Notably, Petrus gained popularity in the US thanks to President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie Kennedy, who praised the wine, attracting wine lovers and associating Petrus with luxury and social status in the market.

Central to Petrus' iconic status is its unique terroir. Situated in the eastern part of Pomerol, the estate sits on a rare double layer of blue clay dating back millions of years. This soil provides optimal conditions for Merlot grapes, allowing deep root systems to access moisture during dry periods and drain excess water efficiently. While the dense soil is not exclusive to Petrus, it blankets the entire property, unlike other estates with only certain proportions, granting unparalleled control over the vines' hydric stress and contributing to the consistently exceptional quality of Petrus wines.

Since the 1960s, Jean-Pierre Moueix's children have been involved in the estate, working with oenologist Jean-Claude Berrouet until the 2000s. The 100% Merlot wines offer a distinctive style with complex aromas on the nose and richness on the palate. Notably, Robert Parker awarded perfect scores to vintages such as 1921, 1929, 1947, 1961, 1989, 1990, 1998, and 2000, elevating Petrus to new heights. In 2009, Olivier Berrouet succeeded his father and continued the legacy with additional vintages receiving perfect scores, including 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2020.

Tasting Chateau Petrus is akin to experiencing a symphony of flavors and aromas. The wine unfolds in luxurious layers, revealing notes of black cherry, plum, truffle, and chocolate, underpinned by a velvety texture and an exquisite balance. It is a wine that evolves gracefully over decades, each bottle a journey through time, culminating in a crescendo of complexity and depth.

Today, Petrus is meticulously crafted through a selection process with low yields, resulting in an average annual production of around 30,000 bottles. This rarity, combined with the estate's legendary quality, has elevated Petrus to a coveted collector's item among wine enthusiasts worldwide.
