Leroy

Leroy

Domaine Leroy is not just a wine producer. It is a beacon of excellence, a symbol of unparalleled craftsmanship, and a testament to the timeless elegance of Burgundy. Revered globally, Domaine Leroy stands at the pinnacle of viticultural artistry, producing wines that epitomize the essence of their terroir with breathtaking precision and beauty. Under the visionary guidance of Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy, the estate has transcended conventional winemaking to create liquid masterpieces that are coveted by collectors and connoisseurs alike, often regarded as some of the finest and most exquisite wines in the world.

The story of Domaine Leroy began with the Leroy family, whose wine business dates back to 1868 when Francois Leroy founded the Maison Leroy in Auxey-Duresses. The family's dedication to quality and tradition was further solidified by Henri Leroy, who expanded the business and developed a strong reputation for their negociant wines.

In 1955, Henri Leroy acquired a 50% stake in Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC), which further elevated the family's status in Burgundy. However, it was his daughter, Lalou Bize-Leroy, who truly transformed the family's legacy. Lalou joined the family business in the 1950s and quickly became a formidable force in Burgundy. In 1988, she founded Domaine Leroy, purchasing vineyards in prime locations across Burgundy, including some of the most coveted Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites.

Domaine Leroy's vineyard holdings are nothing short of extraordinary. Lalou Bize-Leroy initially acquired Domaine Charles Noellat in Vosne-Romanee and then Domaine Philippe Remy in Gevrey-Chambertin. The estate’s prestigious 9 Grand Cru holdings include:

- Vosne Romanee (Richebourg, Romanee Saint Vivant, Clos de Vougeot)

- Gevrey Chambertin (Chambertin, Latricieres Chambertin)

- Corton (Corton Charlemagen, Corton Renardes)

- Morey Saint Denis (Clos de la Roche)

- Chambolle Musigny (Musigny)

In addition to these grand crus, Domaine Leroy also boasts 8 Premier Crus, including Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Boudots, Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Vignerondes, Savigny-les-Beaune Les Narbantons, and Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts. The estate also produces 9 Village wines, such as Vosne-Romanee Les Genaivrieres and Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Allots, as well as multiple Regional wines, including Bourgogne Aligote, Bourgogne Rouge, and Bourgogne Blanc.

One of the defining characteristics of Domaine Leroy is its commitment to biodynamic viticulture. Lalou Bize-Leroy was a pioneer in adopting these practices, which emphasize the health and vitality of the soil, plants, and ecosystem. The use of natural preparations, composting, and lunar cycles are integral to their farming approach, ensuring that the vineyards are in harmony with nature. Madame Leroy’s courageous decision to produce wines with extremely low yields and bottle them naturally, without fining or filtration, is truly admirable and revolutionary at the time. The resulting wines are of incredible concentration and complexity.

Domaine Leroy's wines are celebrated for their purity, depth, and elegance. Each wine is a true expression of its terroir, showcasing the unique characteristics of the vineyard and vintage. The wines are known for their remarkable aging potential, with the ability to evolve and develop complexity over decades. Young Leroy reds are deeply coloured and impressively intense.

Among the Vosne-Romanee Grand Crus, Richebourg and Romanee-Saint-Vivant stand out as divine expressions, each combining power and elegance yet possessing distinct characters. Richebourg is more reserved when young, rich and full of tremendous power, but it requires patience to reach its full potential. In contrast, Romanee-Saint-Vivant is more aromatic and fruit-forward, a wine that explodes in the mouth with intense flavor, immediately appealing yet with the balance and structure to age gracefully. These wines are regularly considered among the finest in all of Burgundy.

Of the Premier Cru wines, Les Vignerondes from Nuits Saint Georges is known for their elegance and finesse. These wines tend to be more approachable in their youth compared to Les Boudots, with vibrant red fruit flavours and a silky texture. In contrast, wines from Les Boudots are robust and full bodied, with a potential for long term aging. They are typically rich in texture and complexity, offering a blend of fruit intensity and savory elements. Savigny-les-Beaune Les Narbantons is particularly aromatic and nuanced. With an abundance of red fruits, these wines are elegant and well-balanced, featuring a refined tannic structure. Wines from Les Beaux Monts are known for their depth and intensity, with remarkable aging potential that allows them to develop greater complexity and finesse over time.

Lalou Bize-Leroy has pushed the boundaries of viticulture more than anyone over the past 40 years. Her determination to produce what she sees as top-quality wine, combined with an unswerving dedication to her principles, is truly commendable and deserving of applause. She also owns and directs Domaine d’Auvenay.
