Haut Brion

Haut Brion

Chateau Haut Brion, located in Pessac-Leognan within the Graves region, is uniquely distinguished as the only estate classified as First Growth that is outside the Medoc. Renowned for its exceptional quality and rich heritage, Haut Brion is a symbol of excellence in winemaking.

Haut Brion was the first Bordeax vineyard to be named after its terroir, rather than its owner. The first vines appeared on the gravel hillsides of Haut Brion in the first century AD. It was one of the first Bordeaux wines to gain international acclaim, with records indicating that it was enjoyed by English royalty as early as the 17th century. Chateau Haut Brion was also among the first estates to systematically bottle its wines on site, starting this practice in 1923.

A new golden era for the chateau began with Clarence Dillon, a New York banker, who visited Chateau Haut Brion during a trip to France in 1934. He completed the acquisition in 1935, and the estate has remained under the Dillon family's ownership ever since. Notably, the Dillon family also acquired La Mission Haut Brion, Laville Haut Brion, and Chateau La Tour Haut Brion half a century later. In the 21st century, they established their family estate Domaine Clarence Dillon and acquired the renowned Saint Emilion estate Chateau Quintus.

The vineyards of Haut Brion are located in the commune of Pessac, just a few miles southwest of Bordeaux’s city center. The gravelly soil, composed of small pebbles of various quartz types, contributes significantly to the terroir's winegrowing value. This gravel lies atop a unique subsoil of clay, sand, limestone, and shelly sand, with depths ranging from 20 centimeters to over 3 meters. These gravel deposits form mounds that promote excellent drainage and guarantee natural water flow.

The vineyard spans 51 hectares, with 48 hectares planted with black grape varieties Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, and 3 hectares dedicated to white grape varieties Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sauvignon Gris. The estate also refrains from using pesticides, limits human intervention, and thoroughly studies the soil and its characteristics. Additionally, a woodland area within the estate fosters biodiversity, serving as a habitat for various birds and wildlife.

The Chateau places great emphasis on the art of blending, a tradition with a century-old culture. This process harmoniously combines different parcels and grape varieties, revealing the true essence of the estate’s craftsmanship. The chateau meticulously selects the best wines, aging them in oak barrels for 18-20 months, adjusting the percentage of new barrels each year based on the vintage characteristics and wine profile.
