Pichon Lalande

Pichon Lalande

Chateau Pichon Lalande, gracefully poised within the prestigious Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux's Left Bank, is an esteemed Second Growth from the 1855 Grand Cru Classe classification. With its subtle elegance and profound character, the wines are often celebrated as a "super second" for their exceptional quality and distinguished presence in the market.

The origins of the great estate of Pichon trace back to the 17th century. But the pivotal moment came in the mid-19th century. Upon the death of Joseph de Pichon Longueville, the estate was divided among his children. His daughter, Virginie de Pichon Longueville, inherited a significant portion. Her marriage to Count Henri de Lalande added his name to the estate, formally creating Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. This division marked the separation from what would become known as Chateau Pichon Baron. In 2007, the Rouzaud family, owners of Roederer Champagne, purchased Pichon Lalande, marking the beginning of a new chapter.

As one of Pauillac's premier wineries, Pichon Lalande predominantly blends Cabernet Sauvignon, but also incorporates a significant proportion of Merlot to enhance the wine's character. Historically, the vineyard included up to 35% Merlot, adding fruitiness, richness, and a silky texture to the wines, which allows for earlier enjoyment without sacrificing aging potential. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are also included to introduce freshness and complexity. With a deeper understanding of the terroir and in response to climate changes, the estate has increased its Cabernet Sauvignon proportion, yielding wines with finer tannins, more structure, and greater aging capacity. Nevertheless, Pichon Lalande's style remains softer and more elegant compared to Pichon Baron’s robust style.

On average, Pichon Lalande wines are aged in oak barrels for 18 months, with around 50% new oak. While their wines possess a notable softness that allows for earlier drinking compared to other super second growths, most vintages benefit from aging. In their youth, Pichon Lalande wines exhibit a deep garnet-purple color, elegant fruit aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and cassis, complemented by pronounced notes of cedar, graphite, smoke, vanilla, clove, nutmeg, and savory elements. As they mature, the wines develop more pronounced truffle, spice, and leather aromas, with hints of mint. The body becomes smoother, and the tannins acquire a velvety texture.

Pichon Lalande boasts many noteworthy vintages, with the legendary 1982 standing out. This wine received a perfect 100-point rating from Robert Parker and rivals many First Growths, remaining strong even after over 40 years ageing. Other exceptional vintages include 1986 and 2000, which are also highly enjoyable. Top vintages like 2010 and 2015 are perfect for collectors, promising even more remarkable developments in the future.
