Leoville Las Cases

Leoville Las Cases

Chateau Leoville Las Cases, a renowned Second Growth from the 1855 Grand Cru Classe, is celebrated as one of the finest estates in left bank Bordeaux. Notably, unlike most Grand Cru Classe wineries, its labels omit any mention of the 1855 classification.

This storied estate has a rich history that traces back to its origins in the 17th century. Emerging from the historic Domaine de Leoville, one of Medoc's oldest estates, the property was divided into three Chateau as a result of the French Revolution: Chateau Leoville Las Cases, Chateau Leoville Barton, and Chateau Leoville Poyferre. Of these, Leoville Las Cases inherited the largest portion, comprising 60% of the original estate's core land.

Under the stewardship of the Delon family since the late 19th century, Chateau Leoville Las Cases has consistently produced wines that epitomize the depth, elegance, and structure of Saint-Julien. The vineyard boasts an average vine age of 52 years, predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, which defines the estate’s robust and age-worthy style.

The terroir is exceptionally diverse, composed mainly of Quaternary gravel over gravelly sand and clay subsoils. Situated near the Gironde River, the vineyard benefits from a unique soil diversity shaped by various geological periods. The river's influence allows for earlier grape ripening, protecting the vines from frost. Limited water supply and balanced nutrients enhance the quality of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Winemaking at Leoville Las Cases combines respect for tradition with modern precision. Harvesting is done manually, with meticulous sorting of the grapes to ensure only the best are used. The estate’s Grand Vin is known for its tight structure, solidity, austere and powerful presence. It exudes classic Bordeaux flavors of dark berry, black currant, cedar, and tobacco leaf, with a hint of First Growth Pauillac wonder. The wine's aging potential is extraordinary, typically requiring 15-20 years to reach its peak. Exceptional vintages include 1982, 1985, 1986, 1990, 1996, 2000, and many recent years from 2015 onwards, highlighting the estate’s commitment to excellence.
