Latour

Latour

Behind the iconic fortress tower on the label, Chateau Latour represents the deep heritage and enduring presence in the Bordeaux wine region. For many wine enthusiasts, Latour stands as the pinnacle among the First Growths, renowned for its exceptional and consistent quality.

Latour holds a significant place in the history of the region, with the earliest known document referencing Latour dating back to 1331 during the Hundred Years' War. This document refers to a Lord authorizing the construction of a defensive fortress, which eventually lent its name to the Chateau. After numerous marriages and inheritances, Latour came into the possession of Alexandre de Segur. In 1716, Alexandre acquired Chateau Lafite, and his son, Nicolas-Alexandre de Segur, often referred to as the "Prince of the Vines" by King Louis XV and serving as the president of the Bordeaux Parliament, expanded the family's holdings in 1718 by acquiring additional land from the Mouton and Calon estates, heralding a golden era for Bordeaux wines.

Ranked as a First Growth in the 1855 Grand Cru Classe alongside Lafite, Margaux, and Haut-Brion, Latour's ownership changed hands several times until 1993, when it was acquired by François Pinault, head of the luxury conglomerate Kering Group. Today, Pinault's portfolio includes top-tier estates such as Latour, Clos de Tart, and d'Eugenie. Under Pinault's stewardship, significant transformations at Latour have reinforced its commitment to excellence. In 2012, the estate withdrew from the Bordeaux en primeur sales system, choosing instead to age its wines in its newly constructed cellars, reflecting Latour's confidence in its own capabilities.

The vineyards are primarily planted on gravel-rich hilltops near the Gironde estuary in Bordeaux. The perfect combination of the gravel surface layer and the clay subsoil grants Latour's vineyards an unparalleled terroir advantage. The vines, particularly the old ones, develop root systems that can reach depths of up to three meters, allowing them to thrive even in dry or drought conditions and achieve optimal ripeness.

Latour currently produces three wines, the most renowned being the first wine, Le Grand Vin, and the second wine, Les Forts de Latour. The grapes for the first wine are sourced from the estate's finest terroir, known as the Enclos, where the vines average 60 years old. The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend endows Latour with its deep colour, rich and dense tannins, and substantial mouthfeel. Even the second wine is considered comparable to many Grand Cru Classe wines. In excellent vintages, Latour's vitality and structure enable it to age effortlessly for decades. Additionally, Latour is known for its ability to produce fine wines even in challenging years.
