Descriptions, Ratings & Tasting Notes

A rare bottling from the closed distillery Glenesk, distilled in February 1981 and matured in a sherry cask #934 before bottling by Duncan Taylor in August 2007.

Known as Glenesk from 1980-85, and prior to that as Hillside since 1964, this distillery produced both malt and grain at different stages in its history. It is not often seen officially bottled, but has contributed to several Rare Malts Selection releases. Distilling ceased there entirely in 1985, and the site operates exclusively as a maltings now.

Nose: Dark sherry, the filthy variety, first a lot of wood, then slightly musty, then a little diesel with time to fight the sherry-type dried fruit in the background and eventually gain the upper hand. Strong, beautiful nose to my taste. Mouth: sour, surprising, oak, dirty, salty, diesel, oak, always latently sweet. Departure: Menthol, a lot of oak, a slight UHU note, at first sweet Sherrynoten that ends up in rather bitter, astringent oak notes. Conclusion: This type of sherry can easily become too much. In the mouth, the acid tilts almost the overall flavor, but just got the curve again. Otherwise, an incredibly intense, spicy sherry dram on the slightly dirty side. Especially the nose is incredible.
