While this is clearly quite ripe it is nowhere near surmature with its exuberantly spicy nose of cassis, black cherry, wet stone and earth; indeed this is really quite fresh in the context of the '03 vintage. There is seriously impressive richness to the bold, robust and big-bodied flavors that are brimming with mouth coating dry extract, all wrapped in a firm, explosive and gorgeously long finish. This is not an elegant vintage for this wine but at this stage in their evolution few 2003s are what might be characterized as refined. From the standpoint of style, this is far from being my favorite but make no mistake, this is going to one day be an exceptionally special wine as everything is in place for it to develop into a magnificent Richebourg.
