Producer note: Bouchard winemaker Philippe Prost argues that 2001 is "built around its acidity and while this provides wonderful purity of expression as well as excellent delineation and precision, we wanted to be very careful not to utilize too much new oak as we feared it would permanently mark the wines. The essential character of the wines is purity and tenderness and we noticed early on that they took up their oak very quickly so we reacted accordingly". Prost went on to note that 2001 is a vintage that very much favored the better situated sites, in particular the grands crus. He went on to note that "yields were generous and we did a lot of green harvesting to make sure that we had adequate densities. Ripeness levels were not at all the same and we had better acid/sugar balance in 2001 in Puligny than we did in either Meursault or Chassagne." I would agree with Prost's assessment as the Bouchard 2001 grands crus are only a touch behind their stunning 2000s. (Clicquot Inc., New York, NY). Tasting note: Sumptuously ripe aromas of peach and apricot with a hint of toasty oak and smoke lead to full-bodied, sappy, muscular, massively scaled flavors that are breathtakingly rich and quite densely concentrated, especially on the impressively long finish and this stains and coats the palate completely. Despite all of the size, this remains impeccably balanced and as good as the La Cabotte is, the Montrachet delivers that extra dimension to surpass it by a nose, if you'll forgive the pun. Seriously beautiful juice and a great success for the vintage.
