Ratings & Tasting Notes

Tasted 7 Times Since Bottling With Consistent Notes Broodingly backward and in need of considerable bottle age, the 1988 is a classic expression of Lafite. This deeply-colored wine exhibits the tell-tale Lafite bouquet of cedar, subtle herbs, dried pit fruits, minerals, and cassis. Extremely concentrated, with brilliantly focused flavors and huge tannins, this backward, yet impressively endowed Lafite-Rothschild may well turn out to be the wine of the vintage!

1988 Château Lafite Rothschild was the best dry red tasted at the party. It was deep ruby in colour with slight amber rim. The aromas were packed with typical Lafite aristocratic funk of earth and iron, supplemented with roasted bell pepper and spices. Primary characteristics of blackberries and cherries well-supported the complex tertiary characters. The mouthfeel was rather full bodied with medium level of balancing acidity. The medium-high level of tannin was mature and fully resolved. The graceful 31 years old wine was well-balanced, regal and elegant, concluding in an extremely long finish of minerals, black tea and spices.
