This drank unbelievably well, particularly given that 2000 has a reputation as a tricky vintage in California. But this was incredibly good, and our impeccably stored bottle proves the "drink by 2015" moniker wrong. Color is still bright red, medium/dark with just the slightest amount of bricking at the rim. Nose is phenomenal - it truly is like marrying a Bordeaux with California fruit: leather, tobacco, cedar, just a hint of pleasant blackberry to round it out. Texture is super velvety, like silk. Tannins are nicely rounded at this point with a hint of sweetness on the finish which contrasts nicely with the overall savory characteristics of the nose. Nice long finish too. While I don't think this is, say, a 10yr wine at this point, I do think the active drinking window is still at peak. Decanted for about 30 minutes prior to drinking, certainly didn't hurt. I know it's expensive and widely available and not a single-vineyard concoction, but Opus has really never disappointed me. Definitely an elite wine.
