I enjoyed this tremendously. It had a lovely nose, very savoury at first, with meat and earth and tons of tobacco scents floating around some ripe, almost stewed notes of black cherry and cassis. With a bit of time, bits of herb and spicy bramble emerged, along with a beautifully sweet floral accent. What a wonderful nose. The palate was a lovely expression of sappy fruit flavours as well, with really ripe plums, black cherries and cassis tones. These were very 1982 in their warm succulence, yet also nicely lifted with by juicy acidity and a lovely seam of spice and tobacco that ran through the wine. With time, a nicely salty bacon note started coming out on the midpalate as well. This was so yummy, and quite lovely with a couple of pork dishes on the menu. My only grouse is perhaps that it was not as deep or persistent on the backpalate as I would expect from such a great vintage, but even there it had its charms, with silky tannins leading into a gentle finish of plum and prune flavours seasoned with a good amount wood spice and cigar. Really nice, and drinking beautifully at the moment.

This fully mature 1982 displays a weedy, herbaceous character interwoven with notions of earth, fruitcake, cherry jam, and spice box. Representative of the old style Pavies, it is moderately endowed, with ripe tannin, but not a great deal of concentration. It needs to be consumed over the next 2-4 years.
