Amazing - the best 1er Cru wine I can remember drinking in a long, long time. The 1985 NSG Murgers in the same flight was every bit as impressive, but this was perhaps just that touch closer to its peak, and for that reason, just that bit more special. The nose was deep and masculine, so much so that one would have sworn that this was the NSG instead, with layers of funk and earth, meat, and then shades of boiled herbs and spices, alongside a deep draw of dark plums. Attractive in a deep, powerful way. It was quite a change of gear on the palate after that, but wow, what a shift - it was all super-fresh and juicy, with a sweet, seductive succulence in the way its sweet and savoury flavours of sour plums and sour cherries just burst through the mouth - sweet, deductive succulence. A real surprise after that very savoury nose. There was a wonderfully elegant underlying structure as well, with fine tannins and fine acidity carrying the wine into a finish of superb fullness and length, where the juicy fruit was met with shades of earth, orange peel and a little kiss of spice that just went on and on and on in the mouth. Wow. A great wine that I really savoured on the night - this will stay long in the memory.
