Medium dark crimson color with slight signs of bricking. Nose dominated by a savory umami flavor along with wood, ash, shoe polish, dried berries, and Christmas spices. Texturally this is very smooth in the mouth, with gentle red fruit at the front of the palate. This disappears somewhat at mid palate before becoming a bit tart and astringent at the end. The wine finishes long with the lingering flavor of bitumen. Great Château + mediocre vintage = above-average wine, but this falls well short of the life-changing potential of really great first growth Bordeaux. Mostly, I'm impressed by the longevity here, though this should be enjoyed before its 36th birthday.
