Had this after Lafite Rothschild and Léoville Barton from the same vintage, all wines were double decanted 12 hours before dinner. Classical and very elegant Saint-Emilion. Red and black berries with only a hint of tertiary notes, on the palate focussed, good freshness, medium+ bodied and long finish, has still improved in the glass during the evening. Great now but will stay for many years and may even further improve (95-96).

Tasted at Farr Vintners’ vertical from ex-chateau magnum. The 1994 is showing some maturity on the rim. I have a lot of time for this vintage, although I think it might be a couple of years past its peak. It certainly has a comparatively rustic, almost ferrous nose with touches dried flowers and orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied and quite masculine. Firm backbone, a touch of sage and cumin and just beginning to show some dryness on the Pomerol-like finish. Still a very attractive 1994, but I suspect that it is on the first stages of a gentle downhill slope.
