Descriptions, Ratings & Tasting Notes

This is the old 1990s version of the 18 year old, a release that very much echoed the popular Macallan releases in its aesthetic, and also carried a vintage back then. This one was distilled in 1976.

A sherry casked 18 year old was such a crucial part of the Glendronach portfolio, that they continued to bottled one in the form of the Billy Walker-era Allardice, despite the warehoused stock being significantly older than this for a substantial period due to the inactive stills in the late 1990s. The contents of these only returned to their stated age of 18 years in 2019.

Very pretty Glendronach. The 43% are not a big handicap even if we would have liked more power in the mouth. The nose is more delicious and superior to the mouth. Nose Superb nose. You don't feel the reduction at all. A large dose of camphor fruit, wood. Gooseberry, Goji berry, caramel, toffee, dark chocolate, wood, cinnamon. Camphor, very light wax. A little nettle. A beautiful balanced sherry. With aeration the caramel and chocolate stand out a little more Taste In the mouth it is softer and a little watery. The wood stands out above all, with the bitterness of the cocoa. We have leather, cream, some dust. A little hay, a farmer's. Red fruit, strawberry, redcurrant, red cherry. Finish Fairly woody finish. Wood, chocolate, leather, camphor. Bitter.
