Knew this was an underrated vintage for Lafite, so was not sure what to expect. Didn’t think a ‘79 would need much decanting, but let it air out for about an hour. Immediately upon decanting, the nose was pronounced with unmistakable aromas of an earthy and well-aged Pauillac first growth. Drank over the next 1.5 hours with a New York Strip and au gratin souffle. Was solid and expressive throughout the entire meal — well balanced with structure and finesse, with great notes of leather, tobacco and slate, but never overshadowing the wonderful red fruit. By the time dessert came around, was silky smooth and really singing. Overall, a wonderful Lafite from a vintage that has not received nearly enough credit over time.
