A fully mature (but not post-mature) nose speaks of leather, pungent earth, sous-bois and subtle underbrush and animale notes. The rich, detailed and precise big-bodied flavors are still underpinned by moderately firm but not aggressive tannins while delivering very fine complexity and length on the slightly raspy finish. This would normally deserve a higher rating as the depth really is quite impressive but there is sometimes a trace of finishing dryness that holds it back a bit. This should continue to hold for years to come though the dryness may become more pronounced with extended cellaring. Note that I have experienced a lot of bottle variation over the years and scores have ranged, somewhat incredibly, from 93 to 87.
