The 2013 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru was picked on the afternoon of October 10 and then the following day, cropped at 17.5 hectoliters per hectare. The bouquet is adorable, so pure and comely, with shimmering red cherries, raspberry and orange blossom, a suggestion of cold flint imparting an enigmatic element—a Romanée-Saint-Vivant that is clearly going to bide its time. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, impressive weight and almost a surfeit of freshness. There is tension from start to finish that effortlessly disguises the weight, the penetration on the sustained finish. What a wonderful wine from the domaine. Production is 847 cases. Tasted February 2016.

I was surprised at how expressive, even perfumed, this was given the large format bottling with its overly floral, elegant and airy array of highly spiced red currant, herbal tea and sandalwood scents. There is a silky texture to the wonderfully precise, intense and vibrant medium weight flavors that possess really lovely good complexity, all wrapped in a gorgeously persistent, balanced, youthfully austere and dusty finale. I was also surprised by how relatively accessible this was, not only for the vintage but also again the large sized format. This is not to suggest that the '2013 RSV won't continue to improve over a very long horizon, just that based on how this is showing from magnum, I suspect that it would not be complete infanticide to open a 750 ml now.
