Served alongside the 2002. Both decanted 2+ hours before serving. Stunning aromatic start with black cherry and intense spice. Less exciting when finally served (in contrast to the 2002), with less alluring aromas. Same black fruit throughout, but slightly drying tannins detract from the wine's clear and powerful concentration. If I were to open another bottle, I'd just pop-and-pour the next time. Or give this another 10+ years in the cellar to see where it evolves, given how background the fruit was for a 1998. Confusing wine for me.
