It's always interesting when a wine that you've had a long time ago suddenly reappears and that is the case with the '98 Richebourg as it hadn't crossed my path since 2001. There is mild bricking as well as a mildly cloudy appearance that wasn't due to the bottle having been shaken. Like most '98s today, the nose has gone full-on secondary with a touch of sous-bois on the appealing spicy nose where a touch of leather can be found. There is both good richness and density to the velvet-textured and reasonably vibrant medium-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the solidly complex and sneaky long finish. This is a ripe '98 so the typical raspy character of the tannins really isn't the case though the natural power of Richebourg certainly is. For my taste this is completely mature and there is no further benefit to be had from continued cellaring; with that said, neither is there is any rush to drink up.
