As would be expected, this is much riper than the '77 with obvious volatile acidity adding a touch of lift as well as a hint of additional complexity to the expressive and earthy nose that does not possess the same degree of finesse and elegance of any of the prior wines. The big, robust and somewhat rustic flavors are punchy and rather dry with very firm tannins that dominate the character of the finish. After an hour of air, the elegance of Richebourg began to appear and while this is a perfectly good wine for a vintage that produced many failures, this is perhaps the least successful vintage of the tasting.
