Producer note: Christophe Roumier noted that his 2002 Corton-Charlemagne was racked the week before my November visit. It had already been fined once but Roumier didn't like the results and thus he indicated that he might fine it again. At harvest, the potential alcohol was 12.5% and the must was chaptalized to achieve a level of 13.2%. (Diageo Château and Estate Wines, New York, NY; John Armit Wines, Domaine Direct, Howard Ripley, Morris & Verdin and The Wine Society, all UK). Tasting note: Curiously, this initially possessed slightly off putting fermentation aromas though with air, they dissipated quickly. The overall character here, while still very stony and racy, is rather different from the generous nature of the '02 as this is backward, tight and a bit austere at present as the flavor profile is ultra precise with a strong sense of the underlying minerality buffered by ample dry extract. This too finishes very dry and with excellent persistence. If this adds weight with bottle age, my score may be conservative.
