A good wine - but it is not enough being just a "good" wine for a 1996 Bonnes Mares. We all found this rather disappointing. Brickish, garnet colour. Nice, complex nose, with thick scents of dark plums and cherries, hoi sin sauce, dried plum powder and an earthy, very Bonnes Mares power to it - all very lush, powerful and complex, offering quite a bit. The palate, unfortunately, rather paled in comparison. Still nice, with savoury notes of preserved prunes wed to sweet plums, dark cherries and dried figs with a touch of soy. Very attractive, until the finish, where the power of the wine let-up significantly, ending with a shortish burst of spice, chocolate and a flash of alcohol. I enjoyed the wine quite a bit overall. Saying that though, so good was the 1998 Dujac Morey village and so middling was this 1996 Grand Cru that I thought there was not much to choose from between them.
